Lloyd and Aldean Townsend instilled a deep respect for education in their home. Although neither of them pursued formal education beyond high school, their lives exemplified the values of hard work and dedication. World War II made it impossible for Lloyd to continue his education, while societal expectations led Aldean to begin her career at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company right after high school. Despite these challenges, they succeeded in their careers and in raising four children with a strong appreciation for learning.
Lloyd and Aldean emphasized the importance of education in many ways. Aldean served as PTA president, while Lloyd participated on school advisory councils. They ensured that their children’s religious education was equally robust, faithfully bringing them to church services and encouraging active participation in God’s house. They never missed an athletic, musical, or social event, providing unwavering support for their children’s school activities.
Their dedication to education inspired three of their children to pursue degrees in elementary education. The third sibling initially planned to become an accountant but eventually felt called to the priesthood. With guidance from Bishop Flavin, he found his way back to the field of education.
In time, all four siblings advanced in their educational careers, taking on roles as principals, superintendents, and other leadership positions within school districts. At one point, each sibling was serving as a principal. Lloyd would often joke, “Your mother and I raised four principals, and yet I never had one!” In truth, both parents were exceptional educators—teaching not only in their home but also within the community. Their example was a blessing to all who knew them.
After Aldean passed away in 2007, the family set aside part of her memorial funds to establish a scholarship at Bishop Neumann and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Schools. When Lloyd passed away on December 31, 2008, additional memorial funds were added to expand the scholarship. Today, the Lloyd and Aldean Townsend Memorial Scholarship supports young people in Saunders County, Nebraska, in pursuing a Catholic education. Lloyd and Aldean would be proud to know that their legacy continues to bless students on their faith-filled educational journeys.
