Sr. Michelle Hayek, a Notre Dame Sister, was a longtime member of the Bishop Neumann High School community, serving in many roles. She began her journey with the school as principal in the fall of 1978. Known for her dedication to teacher development, she encouraged and inspired educators to reach their full potential. She was equally devoted to guiding students, helping them discover their strengths and true vocations to serve.
Sr. Michelle possessed a unique ability to balance discipline with joy, earning the admiration and respect of faculty and students alike. She was a staunch supporter of all aspects of school life, from athletics to the fine arts, rarely missing an event during her many years at Bishop Neumann.
One of her significant contributions was founding the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Society, a group dedicated to serving those in need. Under her guidance, the society’s members participated in various service activities, such as assisting teachers at St. Wenceslaus and St. John’s schools, visiting residents at Saunders House, South Haven, and Saunders County Care Center, and organizing religious events like All-School Masses and Lenten activities. The group also held annual retreats, clothing drives, and Christmas gift collections for families in need. To fund their projects, they operated concessions at sporting events. Sr. Michelle’s leadership of this group was a reflection of her deep faith and commitment to serving others.
In addition to her role as principal, Sr. Michelle also served as Development Director, Alumnae Director, Religion Teacher, and substitute teacher. She volunteered at St. Wenceslaus School, assisting young students with reading, and tirelessly supported the school in countless ways.
Sr. Michelle Hayek will always be remembered for her unwavering dedication and impactful service to Bishop Neumann High School and its community.
