Bethany Kavan was born on January 4, 1995, in Fremont to Dale and Tamara “Tammi” Kavan. She attended St. Wenceslaus Elementary School and Bishop Neumann High School. Bethany loved and took special care of her horses, Kevin, Dude and Lolly. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. She was a member of the Bishop Neumann Dance Team, National Honor Society, T.O.R.C.H. Club, American Quarter Horse Association, and seven-year member of 4-H, where she belonged to the Colon Hustlers and Platte Valley Wranglers. Bethany was also members of the Bishop Neumann softball, volleyball, track and basketball teams.
Bethany died on December 28, 2011 in an automobile accident just outside of Wahoo. She was 16 years old.
Tamara L. “Tammi” Kavan was born November 3, 1964, in Fremont, NE. She attended country school at Districts 53 and 61 near Colon. She later graduated from Cedar Bluffs High School in 1983. She married Dale Kavan on January 7, 1984, in Wahoo. They made their home on an acreage near Colon where she raised sheep and horses and barrel raced. She was a licensed optician at Wahoo Vision Center. She was a parishioner at St. Wenceslaus Church where she also served as chairwoman of the bazaar. She belonged to the American Board of Opticians, the Wahoo Saddle Club and Nebraska Suffolk Association. She was a 4-H leader for the Colon Hustlers and horse and halter clubs. She also was the Wahoo Saddle Club queen.
On February 11, 2008, Tammi passed away after a battle with cancer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
As a tribute to both Bethany and Tammi, the Kavan family established a scholarship in their name. Every year, the Bethany & Tammi Kavan Memorial Endowment provides funds for tuition assistance that benefit families in need at Bishop Neumann High School and St. Wenceslaus Grade School.
